Our History

 

Andrew Mims, Jr. began his career immediately after high school while working at an Upholstery Shop in Greer, SC where they upholstered cars and furniture.  Andrew worked with cars doing what they called at the time was roll and pleat, which was similar to channels.  He also learned to tuft leather.  He advanced rapidly in his career by later working for a furniture manufacturer.  He has upholstered for more than forty years where he does all type of furniture including antiques, sometimes making his own pattern.  Andrew Mims, Jr. is an expert when it comes to DIAMOND TUFTING FABRICS.  Over seventy five percent of his clientele come by word of mouth.

Andrew married the love of his life and partner, the former Miss Bobbie Jean Peake in 1958.  They have three children:  Ray, Angella, Adrian, and five grandchildren. 

 

Andrew Mims, Jr. found his niche in upholstering while working for his previous employers and out of necessity for his family.  In 1969, Andrew founded his upholstery out of his home.  Mims Upholstery began a full-time operation with three employees including his wife, Jean.  Expansion became necessary as the business grew.  In 1973, Andrew opened his shop that measured over 6,000 square feet which include a warehouse and 6 employees.  Three years later, a home decorating service was added to the shop.  Andrew and his wife have attended several decorating schools and workshops in the Southeast.  They continue to attend decorating schools in Atlanta and Charlotte.  They attend classes in their industry, in order to stay current on the latest trends in the furniture/decorating industry.  Currently, Andrew Mims, Jr. Upholstery shop offers a variety of services including customs drapes, blinds, shades, bedspreads, and reupholstered furniture.

 

Andrew Mims was named the Small Business Man of the Year by the Middle Tyger River Area Chamber of Commerce.  He was recognized by the Inaugural Committee to attend the Inaugural Activities for the Governor for South Carolina.  Andrew Mims, Jr. is a Sunday School Teacher, Deacon at his church, former member of BB&T Bank Board and the Lyon’s Club.
